Medical care for refugees

In the state of Bremen, the public health authorities are responsible for the provision of healthcare for newly arrived people with a refugee background, including unaccompanied minors seeking protection regardless of residency status, on behalf of the Senator for Labor, Social Affairs, Youth, and Integration. Alongside an initial medical examination, the principal component of this task is the provision of regular medical consultations at the state reception centers for asylum seekers and refugees. In addition to the provision of basic care, people requiring treatment are referred to local specialist medical practices.
Via a healthcare card – the result of an agreement between the State of Bremen and the AOK – people can access statutory medical care while their claim for asylum is being processed in Bremen.

A low-threshold point of contact for medical care, referral to an external network of healthcare service providers, and advice on priority access to the statutory healthcare system is provided by the association for health and medical care for undocumented and uninsured people in Bremen (MVP Bremen e.V.) and for uninsured citizens of Bremen and citizens of Bremen without residency status.
